Interlude - Hemlock to Keats

Hemlock hates mirrors. The dead rear in them. He hides the ghosts by covering mirrors, or turning them to face the wall. If he stares straight at a mirror, if he doesn't catch it out of the corner of his eye, he can stop the ghosts appearing. So he stares himself in the eye and severs his long hair.

Keats hid his hair: white-blonde stood out in the shadows. One of Keats' sharp knives claims the length of it. Then scissors: a messy job. He tells himself that it was getting too long anyway, making him look too much like a girl. What remains is wrapped in dark grey cloth, a trailing length to cover his face.

Hemlock's fancy armour can be hidden beneath the camouflage surcoat, but his sword is too distinctive - it'll have to be stowed. Keats pulls the cloth across his face and stares at himself in the mirror, feeling somehow more at ease.
